Welcome to Black Bark Village

We finally named our neighborhood, Black Bark Village! We read a book (VOTE! by Eileen Christelow) about voting and running for office. The book also touched on voter rights, voter registration, how to vote and recounts. We also read a book about the 2002 janitor strike in Los Angeles (Si, Se Puede! Yes, We Can! by Diana Cohn) and learned about how people unionize to organize collectively to improve their working conditions. One of our class discussions was about city services and the work and responsibilities City Council members might have. Today we started a newspaper and held elections for four City Council seats. Nine students wrote and gave speeches to the community. Monday we will learn which candidates won a seat on the City Council. Stay tuned!
