Community Expectations

One important element of creating a respectful learning environment is to create shared community expectations. I strive to spend the most time on learning and the least on behavior management by developing shared expectations which are frequently reinforced. Many students need instruction and practice with emotional and behavioral skills so our fundamental expectation is one of respect for everyone. That includes respect for each student's learning, opinions, ideas, and right to feel safe and supported at school. I teach empathy and use a restorative justice model when conflicts arise but I will communicate with families when there is a reoccurring issue that would benefit from home collaboration. Examples of these kind of issues are unkind words or actions that target another child, disruptive behavior during teaching or when students are sharing their work with the class, not following class agreements even after a reminder. My hope is that together we can work to support the success of your child at school and create a learning environment where every students feels cared for and supported.
